A beautiful plate of Christmas cookies on a festively decorated table with pinecones and leaves, lights, and cinnamon.

It’s almost that time of year! The sleigh bells are jingling, stockings are being stuffed, and the whole family is preparing for one of the best times of the year: Christmas! Before the joyful morning of family, fun, and presents, you need to make it through Christmas Eve. For parents, that’s not so bad, but for your little ones, it can be a drag, so what better way to make the night before Christmas fly by than by making some cookies for Santa, and some reindeer mix so Rudolph, and the other reindeer don’t feel left out either!

Santa goes through all of that effort every year to make sure all of your Christmas dreams come true. The only things he asks for in return are for you to be good and cookies! So give Santa, and yourself, a little snack for the big night! You could make some basic sugar cookies, good, but a little plain, or the classic chocolate chip cookies. You can’t go wrong there, but here at Ocean State Job Lot, we like to think a little outside of the box, so here is a recipe for one of our favorites. Chocolate crinkle cookies! You can find most of these ingredients on our baking webpage, but always check out your local Ocean State Job Lot, since many of our products aren’t listed on our website!

Chocolate Crinkle Cookies

  • 1-3/4 cups (210 g) all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. kosher salt
  • 3/4 tsp. baking soda
  • 3 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup (150 g) granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup (110 g) packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted
  • Confectioners sugar

Step 1:
Whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, salt, and baking soda in a large bowl.

Step 2:
Whisk together the eggs, granulated and brown sugar, and butter until combined, then pour in the dry ingredients and mix until combined. Now is the hard part. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours and up to 12 hours.

Step 3:
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit, and put oven racks in the top and bottom of your oven, leaving the middle empty. While the oven is heating, take some dough, the more you take, the bigger your cookies will be, and roll it into a ball, then roll that ball through your confectioners’ sugar. You can even roll the cookies twice for a more festive flavor! Then place each rolled cookie on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

A tip for this. If the cookie dough is too sticky, try wetting your hand a bit before rolling it out. That should make it easy!

Step 4:
Bake for 14 minutes, or until the cookies are puffed and cracked. The cracks may look slightly undercooked, but let them cool on a baking sheet.

Step 5:
Enjoy!

Reindeer Deserve a Treat Too!

Now that the cookies for Santa are out of the way, it’s time to feed the reindeer that work just as hard to deliver your presents each year! Rudolph and the rest of Santa’s reindeer will love you for life for making this delicious reindeer feed. It all starts with Bob’s Red Mill oats. The perfect base for any reindeer feed. Pour some into a bag, along with some of our dried fruits and nuts, to add some extra flavor! If you want to make it magical reindeer feed, you can add a sprinkle of colored sugar to give it a festive sparkle. Feel free to cut up some carrots and add those to the bag too!

When everything is in the ziplock bag, give it a shake. Now you can leave it out with the cookies for Santa, and he’ll make sure the reindeer get a treat too!
